1980 article on the 4 dominant gangs of the Westside of LA. Venice, and Culver City started around the late 1950s (though gang activity in Venice goes back to the zoot suit era in the 40s). Santa Monica, and Sotel gangs are said to date back all the way to the 1920s and 30s, Gentrification has served as a mask of buffer paint to how active the west side was at one point, peaking most from the 70s through 90s. Feel how you want about gang culture, but there’s a deep, layered history here.
